Amy Starr and the Paws n' Hooves Mobile Spay/Neuter Van arrived for the 17th van clinic in Columbus in 5 years!  26 Columbus area dogs and cats were spayed/neutered and 41 vaccinations were given.  One cat's eye had to be removed.  Columbus Pat very efficiently coordinated the event with the help of volunteers Martha Rodriguez, Nicole Lawson, and Scott Lawson.

-27,660 pounds of food distributed to the low income of Luna Co , NM. Plus 70 cases cat food!

Together, DAGSHIP Rescue and Columbus Animal Rescue took in 109 dogs and cats and
adopted out 108 in 2016


  • 86 canines (74 dogs, 12 puppies) came into our care in the 11 months for which we collected statistics and began participating in the national Shelter Animal Count
  • 23 felines (16 cats, 7 kittens) also came into our care
  • Most of the animals that came to our no-kill shelter were strays
  • A total of 53 animals were adopted; 35 canines (31 dogs, 4 puppies) and 18 felines (16 cats and 2 kittens)
  • 15 dogs were returned to their owners
  • 40 animals were transferred to other no-kill shelters out-of-state to improve their chance of adoption quickly [38 canines (30 dogs, 8 puppies) and 2 felines (I cat, 1 kitten)]
  • Sadly one dog, in an advanced state of starvation, died in our care after receiving veterinary care, food and affection in its final days
  • The maximum number of animals in our care during a one month period was 17
  • Live Release Rate: 99%  [This figure is based on intake of 109 animals over a period of 11 months and the live release rate of 108 animals.

Spay/Neuter Clinic:

  • 556 total surgeries
  • Canine spay 173, canine neuter  101, feline spay  141, feline neuter  141
  • All animals are spayed or neutered prior to adoption or transfer. 
  • 171 feral cats were spayed or neutered and vaccinated prior to their return to a cat colony caregiver
  • 385 animals belonging to low income pet owners were spayed or neutered at local veterinary clinics utilizing our payment vouchers



A Huge and Exciting endeavor is underway!

DAG is working in conjunction with Sunshine Grooming to build a No-Kill Rescue in Deming, NM.

The name: D.A.G.S.H.I.P. Rescue or Deming Animal Guardians Sunshine Haven Intake Project & Rescue

We have raised enough funds to create the first dog sanctuary, build a quarantine/office building, a pet food holding unit and nearly enough to start the first cat house sanctuary. We sure hope you will help us spread the word so we can continue to build our facility!

  • Together, DAGSHIP Rescue and Columbus Animal Rescue took in 109 dogs and cats and adopted out 108.
  • The Village of Columbus, Luna Co. and the City of Deming continue to support us.
  • Emergency Funds were available for several animals this year.
  • Community support has grown emensly and we are grateful.
  • The law has finally made animal abuse a federal crime. The FBI now classifies animal abuse as a Class-A Felony.
  • Micro-chipping has become very affordable in Luna County at just $6.35

 Deming, NM families have really stepped up to the plate to be responsible pet owners, still much more must be done to address overpopulation.
